About me

I am Hamish MacPherson. I am a London based artist with a background in choreography and philosophy.

As well as photography I have made performances, films, audio pieces, texts, games, workshops, publications, festivals and other things. Much of my work deals with the overlaps and connections between care, choreography and kink and I take this into my photography with an interest in ambiguous intimacy and strange openness.

I mostly shoot with 35mm film using a single lens reflex (SLR), and a point and shoot camera. I also use instant, digital and infrared cameras, my phone, a DVD camcorder and flatbed scanners.

Options

£100: BASIC

This is the simplest kind of shoot, suitable for things like headshots or portraits.

One location, one roll of film, one hour.

At least a third of this cost includes film purchase, development and scanning), and contributes towards overheads like camera batteries and a DropBox subscription. Price doesn’t including travel outside London or location hire (if not home or public place).

Film is by its nature unpredictable so in a typical shoot there might be a few that don’t come out. Others might be ‘imperfect’ in some way but these are often the most interesting. Film will be colour (unless discussed) although type may vary.

£200: CREATIVE

A creative, collaborative shoot that involves planning, research and experimentation. Perfect for exploring your image; taking part in a playful and creative process; or creating promotional shots.

Up to 2 rolls of film with additional images taken with instant cameras, camcorder etc. Can last 2-3 hours.

£300+: PROFESIONAL

More complicated editorial-type shoots with multiple outfit changes, or creative documentation of events lasting 4 or more hours.

Using 2 or 3 rolls of films with additional images taken with instant cameras, camcorder etc.

FREE?

Occasionally I have call outs on Instagram for free shoots, based on my current research interests.

Process

No matter what option you go for, the process will be the same; prioritising comfort and collaboration.

1. Before

  • We arrange a time and place, discuss ideas, boundaries and answer any questions you might have.

  • You pay a £50 non-refundable deposit.

CREATIVE/ PROFESSIONAL

  • I do additional research, book the location if necessary.

  • We share any further ideas we might have.

  • You pick your looks.

2. During

  • During the shoot you can bring a chaperone/ friend to keep you company if you like.

  • If it’s indoors, you’ll have a private space (even if it’s just a bathroom) to change and get ready.

  • We check in with each other and let each other know if we need a break or anything else.

  • I try to share some images as we go (taken on my phone as it won’t be possible to share what I’m taking with my camera) so you get a sense of how things look.

  • We sign an agreement stating how we both can use the images.

3. After

  • I get the 35mm film developed (and/or collect other formats) make some light edits as necessary* to them and then share the medium resolution images with you by DropBox. This takes 1-2 weeks.

  • We agree which images we are happy to be published (e.g. on social media, publications, exhibitions) and how we should be credited

CREATIVE/ PROFESSIONAL

  • All scans are high resolution (20 MB+)

A NOTE ON EDITS

* Apart from occasional adjustments to brightness, contrast etc. I do not edit my photographs. Part of my style is reflecting the interaction we had, and while I take care in directing, staging and finding the images with you, ‘imperfections’ and accidents are part of the process. If you want images that are airbrushed, photoshopped or filtered there are artists who do this very well. However, if a small blemish correction or some other edit will make a photo useable for you we can talk about it . Please don’t edit/filter photos after we have agreed them though.

Testimonials

"After plenty of conversations back and forth, I had the genuine pleasure of shooting with Hamish. We decided to do an outdoor shoot and created some really interesting kink and fetish pieces. He had excellent pre-coms and didn't push boundaries in the slightest. He comes highly recommended with Sims seal of approval! X"

Sim  @comeseesim

"I first came across Hamish's work on Instagram a little while ago. His artistic vision as a photographer is something that I really loved when I first saw his work. Then I decided to shoot with him in my hotel room and I could not have felt more relaxed to have him in my space. He was very aware of my pressed time slot and made sure we didn't run over but that we still completed a realistic shoot in that time frame. He's very good with direction and you will definitely get some gorgeous shots if you work with him. Wouldn't hesitate to work with him again and would highly recommend to others."

Audrey @missaudreybrynnx

"I wanted to work with H as his style of photography stands out for me and his vision matches really well with my own. I like raw, out of the ordinary, candid, characterful stories in pictures and we work really well together as photographer and subject. He is easygoing, kind and a perfectionist in a good way, we worked through ideas together and created a character and narrative as a team. I can't wait for more shoots!"
