STILL LIFE
2016–2020
STILL LIFE was a line of work developed through performances, workshops, and publications that explored care as an aesthetic, choreographic, and political practice.
The work focused on care that was disengaged, reluctant, hostile, or otherwise complicated and problematic. Care was approached as a negotiation of fluctuating needs, capacities, and interests, rather than as a moral or idealised value.
Across its different forms, the work used a simple physical configuration: one person was still or passive, and with them was someone who was not. This setup drew attention to how responsibility, dependency, and obligation are organised when care is enacted rather than declared.
Drawing on knowledge from somatic dance, nursing, and kink, the work examined the physical performances of care, including touch, instruction, consent, and dependency. Stillness and passivity were treated as active conditions that shaped how care was given or withheld.
Rather than making work about care or care ethics, STILL LIFE used this passive–active configuration as a physical question with its own internal logic, allowing forms of dependency and responsibility to emerge through action.
