Alt Prepping

2016-2017
Alt Prepping was a series of collective movement events that explored how people might prepare for unknown futures through shared practices rather than fixed plans. The work reimagined “prepping” as the stockpiling of movements, relationships, attention, and ways of being together.

The events took the form of loosely facilitated, day-long sessions rooted in dance and embodied practice but open to anyone. Participants proposed and tested simple scores involving movement, talking, stillness, and care. The structure allowed things to emerge from those present, with decisions enacted rather than extensively discussed.

Across its iterations, the work focused on preparedness as a social and bodily condition rather than a response to a specific crisis. Practices such as improvisation, meditation, martial arts, and guided movement were used to explore trust, relinquishing control, self-care, and mutual support under conditions of uncertainty.

Rather than rehearsing disaster or imagining utopia, Alt Prepping treated preparation itself as an open question. It asked how people sense change, organise time and attention, and practise care for themselves and others when the future cannot be known in advance.
